Apple celebrates Pride weekend with rainbow Apple Watch bands for employees

As Tim Cook and others from Apple prepared to join in Sunday’s annual Pride parade in San Francisco, the company gave employees a special, limited-edition rainbow-colored watch band to commemorate the event. 

As pointed out by 9to5Mac, a Reddit user posted an image of the watch band along with a letter from the company marking its 30th year in association with Pride and calling the watch band, “a symbol of our commitment to equality.”

Images of the watch band also started popping up on social media.

Cook, who has been open about his life as a gay man, and how his decision to come out could positively affect others, also posted about Sunday’s parade as a large contingent of Apple employees marched in the event.  Read more…

Apple patches 67 bugs in OS El Capitan, refreshes Safari and iTunes

Apple yesterday updated OS X El Capitan to version 10.11.5, patching nearly 70 vulnerabilities as it began to wind down changes prior to the next iteration launching later this year.

OS X 10.11.5 offered few non-security bug fixes and no new features; in other words, it was a typical late-life refresh of an edition.

Apple on Monday also patched the older OS X Mavericks (from 2013) and OS X Yosemite (2014), and issued updates to both iTunes and the firm’s Safari browser.

Of the 67 security flaws fixed in El Capitan, a dozen also applied to Mavericks and 14 to Yosemite, according to Chris Goettl, director of product management at Salt Lake City-based LANDESK, which makes systems and asset management software.

Apple Music may be showing off a major new look in June

Apple Music came late to the music-streaming party and has been trying to play catch up to services such as Spotify. But it doesn’t offer too much over competitors and could use a few fresh features.

Now, the Apple rumor mill suggests Apple is expected to announce an Apple Music overhaul at its Worldwide Developer’s Conference in June, according to Bloomberg. Meanwhile, tech blog 9 to 5 Mac reports the updates will be coming with iOS 10.

If the rumors are legit, Apple Music will be getting a new interface to make the service more intuitive, an expanded online radio footprint and improved integration between streaming and downloading music. Read more…

Update: Apple said to move part of cloud business from AWS to Google

Apple has moved some of its iCloud and services data from Amazon Web Services to Google’s cloud platform, in what is seen as a bid by the iPhone maker to diversify its cloud service providers, according to reports.

The move comes even as the company is building its own new data centers, leading to speculation whether the shift is only temporary.

Google is a rival of Apple in smartphones and other devices, but such deals are common among tech companies in areas where they don’t compete. 

After signing the deal with Google late last year, Apple has significantly reduced its reliance on AWS, whose infrastructure it has been using to run parts of iCloud and other services, reported CRN, quoting sources with knowledge of the matter. The publication put Apple’s spending with Google at between $ 400 million and $ 600 million, though it added it wasn’t clear whether the figures referred to an annual spending rate or a set amount of capacity.

Yes, it’s that time again, when the Apple faithful/crazy line up way early to buy the next version of the iPhone, this time the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.

This year, people are standing out in the elements — and sleeping there overnight — to buy a phone that looks identical to the one they already have, but with, um, an updated camera and a new kind of screen press.
