Self-Driving Cars Can Soon Cruise This State’s Highways Without Anyone Inside

No human back-up driver would be required.

California regulators on Wednesday unveiled revised rules that would allow self-driving cars to travel the state’s highways without human drivers for the first time as early as next year, a move that won the support of automakers.

The new rules represent a compromise with automotive and technology companies, which had objected to many of the requirements previously proposed by the state.

The California rules could still conflict with proposed federal legislation that would largely bar states from regulating autonomous vehicles.

But they are a boost for automakers who want to be able to deploy vehicles without human controls in California.

More than 40 companies are testing self-driving vehicles in California with human controls, and most automakers have autonomous research centers in the state, which is the largest U.S. auto market.

The new rules are expected to take effect by June 2018, the state said.

Waymo, the self-driving car unit of Google parent company Alphabet, Ford Motor, Tesla, <a href=”http://fortune.com/2017/06/13/apple-tim-cook-car/”>Apple</a&gt;, and General Motors had sought changes in California.

Previous rules had demanded that firms submit safety assessment reports to state regulators and seek new approval for updated vehicles.

Existing rules also require a backup human driver to be in all driverless vehicles.

Wade Newton, a spokesman for trade group the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, said Wednesday it appeared that California had recognized that “certain onerous” requirements could delay deployment of self-driving technology.

“We appreciate the (state’s) attempts to streamline requirements consistent with the recently updated federal guidance,” Newton said.

But the Association of Global Automakers, a trade group representing mostly Asian and European automakers, said California did not go far enough.

“A special permit is still required to deploy, creating regulatory uncertainty and raising concerns about the ability of autonomous vehicles to cross state lines,” it said.

Companies would still need a California permit to test or deploy vehicles on state roads.

California would also require automakers and tech firms to record information about autonomous sensors in the 30 seconds before a collision. Vehicles must follow all state laws “except when necessary for the safety of the vehicle’s occupants” or other road users.

Consumer Watchdog criticized the revisions, saying California should stick to its earlier, stricter state requirements.

The group noted local communities could not block testing under the proposal.

Last week, a Senate panel approved a bill aimed at speeding the use of self-driving cars without human controls in the United States, a measure that also bars states from imposing regulatory road blocks.

Automakers would be able to win exemptions from safety rules that require human controls if they met certain requirements. States could set rules on registration, licensing, liability, insurance and safety inspections, but not performance standards.

General Motors chief executive Mary Barra told Reuters on Tuesday that the federal legislation “allows us to get this technology on the road,” but declined to say when the automaker might seek approval for exemptions.

This Electric Bus Can Travel 1,100 Miles Without Recharging

A 40-foot (12.19-meter) electric bus from Proterra traveled 1,101.2 miles (1,772.21 km) at low speed without recharging, cruising to a new electric vehicle range record, the California manufacturer said on Tuesday.

Bus and truck companies are beginning to launch electric models, typically for light- and medium-duty tasks. The new technology often carries a high price, though, and a major challenge is creating vehicles with acceptable range at a competitive price.

A typical Proterra bus costs around $ 750,000 compared with roughly $ 500,000 for a typical diesel bus, chief commercial officer Matt Horton said in an interview. Proterra has lower operating costs but must convince customers that the higher sticker price is worth paying.

“Heavy-duty electric transit vehicles now have the capabilities they need. We will be turning our focus even more so to driving the cost down,” he said.

While battery weight is seen as a problem for heavy-duty trucks, eating into cargo capacity, Horton said that a bus is much lighter than a loaded big rig, even with a full complement of passengers.

Proterra developed the battery for its bus with Korea’s LG Chem. The bus maker has begun assembling battery packs at a new factory in Burlingame, California. It sold 190 buses last year and is on track to “far exceed” that this year, Horton said.

Navistar Proving Ground confirmed the single-charge trip, at 15 miles per hour. Proterra said it set the record earlier this month and beat a previous record of 1,013 miles by a light-duty passenger vehicle.

The iPhone 7 might let you take it for a shower without breaking

If you’ve ever accidentally soaked your phone with water (or more frequently in my case, a pint of beer), you know the anxiety of having to let it dry in rice, and not knowing if your handset is irreparably busted. But this might be a thing of the past with the latest iPhone 7, as it’s rumored to come with IPX7 waterproofing. This essentially means that it is properly waterproof, and can “cope with being dropped in a puddle or stream with no ill effects.” This puts it on the same level as the Apple Watch. iPhones have been getter better at handling…

Is there a way to share files with students without a network?

Question by : Is there a way to share files with students without a network?
I’m stumped. My instructor want’s to have a file share on the network where his students can access files for class, but the I.T. director, my supervisor, says that he can’t use the network or use ad hoc between computers (any platform. The computers we’re using happen to me iMacs, others are Windows XP machines). The first reason is because with large files and multiple students essentially streaming data at the same time would bog the network down (it’s not a very fast network and the school can’t spring for infrastructure upgrades). The second reason, the ad hoc idea, is because there’s a policy against it. No ad hoc on school computers. It would be a workaround since we can’t use the school’s network, but policies are policies.

So now I’m wondering, other than sneakernet (which is what my instructor hates to do because it takes so long at the beginning of the class), what other ideas are there? I’ve found USB flash drive duplicators on Amazon, but those are Expensive (with a capital E, natch’). Maybe something can be done with a couple of 7 port hubs and special software that automatically takes control of those hubs as a poor man’s duplicator? I know there are software solutions for doing this one flash drive at a time, but I’m thinking batch duplications, several at once to cut the time it takes to push out the files to each student. This might not be the best idea, which is why I think I’m probably unaware of better solutions. The files being copied are close to 2GB in size, smallest being about 500MB. Video files. And of course, no use of the network, period. Even for cloud storage. Any ideas?

OK, there are a couple of options.

1.) PirateBox. These motherfuckers are badass. Sit the thing down and the little bugger is like a lil’ server, nomming up and puking out whatever the hell you want it to.

2.) A LAN network. Cat5e is cheap as shit (about 5 cents a foot), so you just daisy chain a bunch of switches and profit.

3.) Patriot Memory Xporter Rage. These have transfer speeds of up to 25 or so MB/s. It may not be as fast as the other options, but if you really must put on the running shoes, these are the way to go.
