5 Brand New iOS 11 Features You'll Want to Try Out As Soon As Possible (Look Away, Android Fans)

Apple might be known for its devices–but the world arguably wouldn’t be the same without their innovative strides with the iPhone–but today, Apple shows off just how much it’s been looking at its program side with the official release of iOS 11. Although there are tons of features to enjoy, here are the best of the best to try out.

1. Do Not Disturb for safer driving

Based on vehicle movement or Bluetooth connections, iOS 11 automatically puts you in ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode while on the road. It can send an automatic reply if a message does come in so others know you can’t respond. I love the proactive approach and stance Apple is taking here on trying to put a stop to distracted driving and frankly, it could save lives.

2. Siri upgrades

Siri and I aren’t exactly at ‘bff status’ yet, but we’re getting there — she (or he, depending on your settings) has selective listening, which can be an aggravation at times. Needless to say, Apple has invested a lot into enhancing the overall Siri experience, including making her sound more like human speech. Siri also can now translate from English into several other languages and customize suggestion based on your device and app usage.

3. What’s up, Dock?

Sitting at the bottom of your screen, the new dock allows you to both launch and switch between apps and play with your windows. It’s much easier to work with more than one app at a time via Split View and Slide Over, and you can tweak what’s in the dock with simple drag and drop of apps and folders.

4. Camera bonuses

Looking to power up your Pokemon Go experience or just mess with your brain? On top of AR, the camera now has LED flash support, new filters, and can scan QR codes without a separate app.

5. Pay friends

Watch out, Venmo.

Owe a buddy $ 10 for pizza? Need to pay your rent to your roomie? Kid find their perfect outfit at the mall? Starting in the fall, Apple will link Apple Pay with Messages, so you can transfer money as you chat. It’s not out just yet, but it’s an incredibly smart move given that companies like Facebook include in-chat payment and digital banking is increasing in popularity. And don’t scoff, either — for all you millennials out there that swear by Venmo (like myself), this is about convenience and eliminating clicks/steps.

P.S. You can pay using Siri, too.

Needless to say, this is only the tip of the iceberg. For a full download on iOS 11’s capabilities, check out their comprehensive guide, here.

Why we do (and don’t) want Google to make its own smartphone

Google is reportedly preparing to start designing and manufacturing its own smartphone, according to a new report. While some giddily clap at the idea of an Android smartphone straight from the mothership, it’s actually not a great idea. Nexus Starting (and possibly ending) with HTC, Google asked its hardware partners to build devices for it. Those devices, dubbed ‘Nexus’ (even if they had additional branding) were essentially top-end smartphones that (mostly) sold for a pretty deep discount. Nexus handsets are also reference devices. Even if you weren’t a fan of straight-up, vanilla Android, Nexus was Google’s soft way of saying…

Oculus Rift made me realize I only want to play games in virtual reality

I’m too disorganized for real-time strategy. I’ve had my fill of fast-paced flight games. I’d don’t want to play another minigame collection ever again.

But I’ve found that I love all of these games in virtual reality, and it’s not just about novelty.

On Monday, Oculus VR held an event as part of the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco to show off the roster of games coming to the Rift head-mounted display, and by the end of the day I realized that I was enjoying nearly everything I tried. That includes games I’ve played before on other platforms and didn’t really care for. Analysts with tech adviser Digi-Capital think VR is going to grow into a $ 30 billion industry by 2020, and it’s easier to imagine that reality knowing that I want sports sims, role-playing games, and everything else in the Rift.

I tried out a variety of Oculus Rift games as part of the company’s event. I did VR Sports, where I used the Touch motion controllers to throw a basketball behind my back and over my shoulder while going up for a dunk in slow motion. That’s a unique “experience” that I haven’t had in any other game, and it’s one that I can’t wait to try with my friends and family. But I already knew that novel new ways of gaming is a big selling point for VR.

What surprised me more than VR Sports is a the game AirMech: Command, which is a continuation of the AirMech game that first came out for PC back in 2012.

AirMech is a third-person arena battler. It is essentially an action real-time strategy game that forces you to manage troops around a map while also flying your own mech around. I tried the original game a few years ago, and I appreciated what it was trying to do. But I also bounced off that iteration for the same reason I fall off of most RTS releases: I have a hard time managing the map. In a lot of RTS games, AirMech included, you only ever see a small portion of the map at a time. For me, it’s hard to keep the off-screen parts of the map in my head. And that’s not a skill I’ve wanted to spend a lot of time developing.

But Airmech in VR is completely different in this regard. Instead of having narrow tunnel vision, the Rift version makes it feel like you are playing a dynamic tabletop game. The board sprawls out in front of you, and you can see more things at once. I can navigate a board game with no problems because it’s part of the real world. And thanks to Rift, AirMech: Command might as well be a part of the real world. It amazed me how fast AirMech clicked with me thanks to this more intimate perspective.

I only got to play it for around 30 minutes, but this is a day-one purchase for me. I can’t wait to lose hours to this game, which takes advantage of VR in an unexpected way.

Like AirMech, Crytek’s The Climb uses the Xbox One controller as its primary input device. That’s interesting because The Climb is a game about using your hands to scale a mountain. You’d think this would make it ideal for the Rift’s Touch controller, and it’s possible that Crytek will implement that in the future. But playing it with a gamepad emphasized again how interesting VR can make everything. The Climb is something that I think I would enjoy even on a monitor or television. It is a series of environmental puzzles where you need to figure out where to put your hands while ensuring you are always gripping to the wall by holding down a trigger button. It’s clever, and it has a lot of potential for racing against your friends’ times.

But playing The Climb had me jazzed. It was another game I just wanted to keep playing for hours. It was so much to make a difficult jump and then look down to see how far I would’ve fallen had I missed. But it also makes the moment-to-moment gameplay more immediate and interesting. I really remember feeling like I was hugging the side of that mountain, and I was leaning my head around to see what my options were for my next hand placement.

After getting time with AirMech and The Climb, I am imagining getting other games I would typically play on a console in VR. I’d love something like a 16-bit Japanese RPG where I can play the game from in third-person and see all of the awesome spells happening, like I they were happening right down in front of me — and I’ve never finished a JRPG in my life.

And I think it’s important to realize that VR isn’t about 15 minute “experiences.” It is about breathing new life into older genres. That’s something we’re getting when it comes to the Rift launch platformer Lucky’s Tale, but I hope we get even more because I can already tell that I’ll struggle to return to a 2D static screen after playing VR.

I WANT OPINIONS!! Life sucks to deal with. i live in Arkansas and they work in California! shit.
What see

Best answer:

Answer by IW Fanboy
For the IW HQ being in California, don’t worry about it. You can always move there when you’re ready to work for them. Surely you have seen your dad making your family move somewhere else for his job, it’s like that.

For the job positions, choose whichever you are better at, and that you think you are going to have a good time working there. For example, I would go for the position that involves animations and environment, so I would choose animated environment artist, etc.

Hope this helps!

I want to know, what do my homies on Y!A think of my story?

Question by ~Chris~: I want to know, what do my homies on Y!A think of my story?
FIRST CHAPTER DAWGGZZZ:

At two hours past midnight, the low drone of a coming train rang out through the cloistered halls of Middleton Station. The rhythmic thumps of its engine reverberated off of the aging limestone walls, and the hollow echo of its wheels rumbling along the rails called out like the mournful cries of some long lost spirit, trying to find its way home.
Visibly chilled by the strange, somehow pitiful sound, a young woman standing alone on the station platform wrapped her light wooden coat more tightly around her body. It did little to keep out the bone chilling cold of the night, and even less to protect her from the awful, biting frost growing inside of her.

Down a dark tunnel to her left, the woman saw the blinding headlamp of the train as it approached, casting images of crystal chandeliers and ancient waiting benches in sharp silhouette against the walls and on the ceiling. Where the creeping fingers of darkness stretched across the ceiling, they crawled across a mural of angels flying amongst the clouds; an image already obscured by a century’s worth of dust and soot.

From behind the glaring light, the front of an ancient black locomotive started to resolve out of the gloom. It was a relic of an earlier time; a steam engine followed by a long line of ornate passenger cars, which rolled up to the platform like a great steel serpent. Lights gleamed through the train’s curtained windows, casting moving rectangles of jeweled light on the station’s tiled floor.
As the train slowed, the young woman was able to make out words carved into wood grain on every other car. “Southampton Line” was written on them in golden relief. Perhaps, she thought idly, Southampton was the train’s final destination. She didn’t really know where that was, but it sounded fine to her. When she had bought her ticket for the two AM train, she hadn’t bothered to check where it went. As long as it would take her away from Middleton, she didn’t really care.
Reaching into her purse, the woman took out her train ticket, looking over it to make sure that everything was in order. Her name was on the top, followed by, ‘board 1 for Southampton Line’, and then the departure time. Nowhere was there any mention of where the train went, except for a small notation at the bottom, ‘Middleton to Domestic Station. No Passport Required.’

When the row of cars finally ground to a half in front of her, the young woman got ready to climb on board. With her ticket in hand, she zipped up her purse and walked a few feet down the station to where a door slid open on the side of the train.

Just before she could step off of the platform and onto the stairs leading into the passenger car, the young woman thought that she saw a shadow passing by one of the windows further down the line. When she looked again, though, she saw nothing but pale amber light passing through a burgundy curtain to cast a vivid red pool on the floor. A brief image of a man with a knife shot through her mind before she could force it out. She was just paranoid, she told herself, and after all that had happened over the past few days, who could really blame her? Still, it took almost physical courage for her to step over the threshold and into the warm, musty interior of the train car.

What is cloud computing? How can I utilize cloud computing if I want to establish a website?

Question by samurai: What is cloud computing? How can I utilize cloud computing if I want to establish a website?

Answer by xcelled194
Cloud computing relates to documents stored on web servers “In the cloud” (on the internet).

This has several advantages, two of the most obvious being instantaneous anywhere access (Like Yahoo Mail) and backup of documents.

Technically any website is “in the cloud” but I assume you want something like Google sites, Where you design the site and it sits on Google’s servers, with a minimum of effort. If you just want to access (or share) a document from anywhere, use google docs. The links are in Google’s “more” section.
