Channels needs to provide cloud security reassurance

IBM Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is a style of computing in which dynamically scalable and often virtualized resources are provided as a service over the Internet.

Users need not have knowledge of, expertise in, or control over the technology infrastructure in the "cloud" that supports them.

The concept generally incorporates combinations of the following:

Infrastructure as a service (IaaS)
Platform as a service (PaaS)
Software as a service (SaaS)

Other recent technologies that rely on the Internet to satisfy the computing needs of users.

Cloud computing services often provide common business applications online that are accessed from a web browser, while the software and data are stored on the servers.

The term cloud is used as a metaphor for the Internet, based on how the Internet is depicted in computer network diagrams and is an abstraction for the complex infrastructure it conceals

The first academic use of this term appears to be by Prof. Ramnath K. Chellappa (currently at Goizueta Business School, Emory University) who originally defined it as a computing paradigm where the boundaries of computing will be determined by economic rationale rather than technical limits.

Question by Jennifer G: How does ‘Cloud Computing’ and Linux work together?
I was wondering if Linux had anything to do in the development of Cloud Computing, and if it was in any way related?

Best answer:

Answer by beakergeek724
Linux is simply another operating system, just like Windows or OS X. The fact that there are no licensing fees associated with using Linux has made it popular among Amazon EC2, Google App Engine, and other cloud computing services. It also has the advantage of being highly customizable.

However, cloud computing isn’t exclusively built on Linux. Microsoft is working on a Windows-based cloud computing system called Azure. Also, there is no reason why a company couldn’t create a cloud computing solution built on top of OS X.

Q&A: Can you provide detailed examples of cloud computing?

Question by Alex G: Can you provide detailed examples of cloud computing?
I’m really fascinated with the concept, but I’m not too sure how it works in practice. Can you provide some examples of how a business or individual can use cloud computing, and maybe how I use it every day without knowing it? Thanks a lot.
By the way, when Limewire was around and people shared files through its server, was that somehow cloud computing?

Answer by Colanth
Google Docs is an example of cloud computing – the app is on the server. (It’s a throwback to the 70s.) Limewire is filesharing, not cloud computing.
