Tenzing Announces Security Partnership with Alert Logic to Protect its Private Cloud

A new partnership between Tenzing Managed IT Services and Alert Logic is aiming to bring more stringent security to the private cloud space.

The partnership will focus on intrusion detection and vulnerability notification set by the Payment Card Industry-Data Security Standard, a global security standard designed to stop the proliferation of online credit card fraud. The company hopes that this will ease the security apprehensions that clients may have as they bring their systems into the cloud via the Tenzing’s hosted solutions.

This new partnership will allow Tenzing to incorporate Alert Logic’s detection software within its cloud based platform, allowing customer to comply with PCI (News – Alert)-DSS standards without having to purchase additional security solutions.

“PCI compliance is a huge expense for customers and service providers alike,” said Gray Hall, president and CEO of Alert Logic. “By partnering with Alert Logic, Tenzing adds an affordable security and compliance solution to their overall portfolio to help customers realize the full benefit of moving IT infrastructure to the cloud.”

“Tenzing has a proud history of working with best-of-breed partners to deliver optimal solutions that address an increasing number of challenges for our customers, including regulatory compliance,” said Kelly Beardmore, CTO at Tenzing. “The addition of Alert Logic’s intrusion detection and proactive threat management greatly complements our existing security services and together we provide customers with peace of mind.”

Through Alert Logic, Tenzing will offer Payment Card Industry (PCI) vulnerability assessments for clients required to use PCI-DSS. Alert Logic is an Approved Scanning Vendor (ASV) by the PCI Security Standards Council. An ASV will allow Tenzing customers to evaluate the security of their systems and provide reports to prove compliance to auditors thereby helping them in achieving compliance with PCI-DSS.

This partnership adds to an already busy year for Tenzing, which in September announced the appointment of a new Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing Randy Fougere “Randy brings a unique combination of senior level technology-related skills that will play a key role in helping Tenzing achieve our strategic goals in the SaaS (News – Alert) and Ecommerce markets,” says Brian Shepard, founder and CEO of Tenzing. “As a rapidly growing company in managed hosting, Tenzing will benefit from his proven experience in driving highly successful go-to-market and retention strategies. He has a solid reputation in the industry for his hands-on approach and ability to deliver results.”

The news of the Alert Logic partnership, coupled with these big moves at the top levels of Tenzing, are not surprising given the rampant growth of private cloud sector over the past several years. With the ability to assimilate and offer new and dynamic utilities to customers opting for a hosted solutions, Tenzing and the private cloud hosting market in general are likely to continue to grow exponentially. VMware Strengthens Cloud Infrastructure Strategy, Introduces New Products to Drive IT as a Service

VMworld 2010 Europe, VMware Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, continued to expand its strategy for modern IT infrastructures, announcing new and enhanced products and programs to help enterprises and service providers achieve the benefits of cloud computing while maintaining the control and freedom of choice they require.

Introduced at VMworld 2010 in San Francisco, IT as a Service is the transformation of IT to a more business-centric approach, focusing on outcomes such as operational efficiency, competitiveness and rapid response. This means IT will shift from producing IT services to optimizing production and consumption of those services in ways consistent with business requirements. This will change the role of IT from a cost center to a center of strategic value.

“The transformation of IT infrastructure to a hybrid cloud model has begun,” said Raghu Raghuram, senior vice president and general manager, Virtualization and Cloud Platforms, VMware. “VMware continues to drive this next generation of IT forward with solutions for enterprises and service providers that promise to redefine IT’s relationship with its business partners and enable IT services to be consumed when and how they best serve the goals of the business.”

The VMware cloud infrastructure and management vision is an evolutionary model of IT infrastructure based on virtualization that unifies hybrid, private and public cloud resource pools with consistent security, compliance, management and quality of service. Building on the VMware vSphere™ foundation, the cloud infrastructure products and services VMware announced in August at VMworld 2010 in San Francisco – VMware vCloud™ Director, the VMware vShield™ product family and VMware vCloud Datacenter Services – introduced a hybrid cloud model that seamlessly bridges private and public clouds.

VMware is also expanding its VMware Service Provider Program (VSPP), more than doubling the number of products available to participants and introducing new, simpler pay-for-use bundles and licensing. The addition of VMware vCloud Director, the Zimbra™ Collaboration Suite, the VMware vShield product family, VMware vCenter CapacityIQ, and several other VMware products will allow VSPP service providers to expand their offerings beyond infrastructure services to include platform as a service, desktop as a service, email hosting and many other incremental cloud services.

A cornerstone of the VMware vCloud Initiative, the VSPP provides pay-for-use licensing, market development funding, access to software and other programs to help service providers grow their businesses. Since its launch in 2008, the VSPP has experienced rapid growth with more than 2,900 service providers in the program today and 145 percent growth in the last 12 months.

CloudSigma Cloud Hosting Provider Launches New Cloud Server Security Suite

Cloud Hosting – 2010-09-20 – A provider of cloud servers, CloudSigma AG, announced the launch of the cloud security suite in conjunction with its cloud computing platform. The company alleges that the new security suite, designed to work in conjunction with its existing web console interface, offers enterprise level security options for public cloud servers.A sample of a reliable cloud hosting can be found in vexxhost.com hosting plans.

It articulated that a growing number of the company’s customers come from the enterprise space. Enterprise customers are looking for solutions that offers secure access from within their corporate environment. Unfortunately traditional VNC access is often not possible due to restrictions on software installation and/or firewall rules within an enterprise environment. The in-browser VNC solution allows enterprises to access their cloud servers securely over the HTTPS port without having to modify their firewall settings or potentially compromise the security of their in-house desktop machines by allowing installation of third party software.

• Enable/disable FTP gateway functionality
• Control web console inactivity timeout periods
• Allow two stage login authentication using SMS

The company states that in this way, customers can dial in the level of restriction they wish to achieve with their web console access. The two stage authentication combines the usual initial username/password combination with a second stage SMS code verification step. It is quite similar to the latest generation systems employed by banks to secure retail access to their online banking. All failed attempts are logged and the account owner is alerted instantly informing customers when a password has become compromised as well as providing a comprehensive audit trail.

It further states that API access represents a double-edged sword for those looking to use public Infrastructure-as-a-Service clouds. On one hand, it allows full automation of cloud infrastructure allowing automatic scaling, load balancing and more. At the same time, however, such powerful tools represent a significant threat to a company’s infrastructure if not secured correctly. Detailed access control to the API is an essential part of maintaining the integrity of a company’s infrastructure. The following new settings allow customers to secure and limit access:

• Switch off API access completely
• Create an IP white list for API access
• Allow http/https or only https API access
• Choose between plain or digest authentication
• Choose between username/password or UUID/API key authentication

The company claims that these critical settings allow customers to tightly control the access and authentication to the API. The combination of secured web console access and secured API access present a robust answer to the concerns that have been raised with regards to securing infrastructure in a public cloud environment.

Patrick Baillie, CloudSigma AG CEO commented, “This latest announcement brings our cloud into the lead in terms of user controlled security options in the public cloud arena. Features such as two-stage authentication, IP white lists and more mean adding a public cloud to your infrastructure doesn’t mean taking a step down in terms of security.” Baillie continued, “We are seeing more and more demand from our customers for very fine grain security controls and audit trails from their cloud computing. New features such as our API white list and improved authentication options allow companies to bolt-on our public cloud to their existing infrastructure. Our customers are deploying VPNs then carefully restricting access to cloud infrastructure management tools using this security suite.”
