Q&A: Why Is Searching on Google Downloading Files to My Computer?

Question by leblancphotography: Why is searching on Google downloading files to my computer?
So I don’t normally ask too many questions on here, but trying to search for “google search download” isn’t really too useful in any search engine.

So I use Google Chrome on a Macbook Pro (Mac OS X 10.6.8) and the problem occurs when I’m on Google’s web site. Not every time I search, but every so often my computer will automatically download a file named “search.” There’s no extension to the file, but on my computer it automatically opens in TextEdit. I’ve uploaded the file to a Cloud Server for anyone to see it, although I believe looking at it probably won’t help.

What is causing this download? And how can I prevent it? I’m tired of my downloads folder getting filed up with files named “search,”search (2),” “search (3),” etc.

Thanks for your help.

If you use Google Toolbar then that could cause your symptom. Either disable/remove it or upgrade it to the most recent version (for your browser type).
