Cloud computing is divided into three segments: ‘platforms,’ ‘applications,’ and ‘infrastructure.’ One of the most important parts of the cloud computing structure is the Cloud Platform.
The cloud platform allows developers to write applications that run in the cloud and use the services provided from the cloud. For business IT solutions, cloud computing ‘platforms,’ offers different products and different functions. Most of the cloud computing providers that provide on-demand applications and services offer three platform services that include: Platform as a Service, Infrastructure as a Service, and Software as a Service.
Platform-as-a-Service includes platforms for building and running custom applications. The development platforms are hosted in the cloud and accessed through a browser. Developers have the ability to build web applications without having to install any tools on their computer. They deploy the applications without requiring any specialized systems administration skills. Developers do not need to buy databases, servers, networks, and a host of development tools to develop software which allows them to save money and focus on developing applications.
PaaS offerings can include application services and facilities for the following: web service integration and systematizing, application instrumentation, application design, application versioning, application development, as well as deployment, testing, security, database integration, scalability, and storage.
The infrastructure segment of cloud computing or Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) is a provision model whereby a company outsource the equipment used to support operations. This includes servers, hardware, storage, hardware, and networking components. The service provider houses, runs, and maintains all of the operations and the customers pay on a per-usage basis. Features of the IaaS include: dynamic scalability, utility computing service, automation of administrative tasks, desktop virtualization, and internet connectivity. Businesses can take up computing power when traffic is high and when traffic subsides they can release servers back to the cloud.
Sometimes called on-demand software, Web-based software, or hosted software, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is a computing technology that delivers applications over the Web as a service. Businesses do not have to install and maintain software. Users easily access it through the Web. All they require is a compute device and an Internet connection. SaaS applications run on a SaaS provider’s servers. The provider is tasked with managing access to the application which includes performance, availability, and security.
For businesses, the benefits of cloud computing are numerous making it essential computing technology for every business, whether small, medium, or large enterprise. The cloud infrastructure is vital to hosting solutions as it offers such benefits as flexibility, reliability, lower costs, security, high scalability and high performance. If you work in application development, the cloud platform, particularly Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) will be the next generation platform you will most likely be using as more IT developers are realizing the benefits the cloud platform provides.

Question by sampan_50: Three categories of Cloud Computing?
I need more clarity on the three categories of Cloud Computing – IaaS, PaaS and SaaS. What purpose do these serve? As a user, do i have the option of using only one service amongst the three or do they always come together? How do these three differ from the three layers of Cloud Computing – Application, Platform and Infrastructure? Again, can I avail of just one?
